Hi, just done reading a blog of an acquaintance of mine. As a Malay bumiputera and a MARA scholarship holder, I'm obliged to post a reply, so here goes. This is my opinion about her opinion. Be nice or just leave.
Based on what I learnt from the Biro Tatanegara camp, (a programme which is made compulsory for all sponsored students who are pursuing their degree studies abroad), what is fair is not always equal, and what is equal is not always fair. Confused already ? okay, let's break the two sentences down.
On top of all, fairness and equality are certainly not the same thing. Say, you got RM 25 for pocket money per week from your parents. Your brother also got the same amount as you. They give you both the exact sum of money even though you are 5 years older than your brother. Your parents are treating you equally. This is Equality.
Fairness, on the other hand is you give or take something based on your personal needs, not someone else's. Say, your mom bought an RM 50-XL top for you, and an RM 25-S top for
your bro. She is being fair, because the purchase is based on your personal need.
So, you see ? things don't always have to be equal so it's fair.
The same concept applies to the "unbalance quota system" for our scholarships, that seemed to "favour the bumiputra-s" or as the blogger said favour "those in their own circle" ??

I can't see any injustice going on here, the current quota for scholarship is 55:45, and should be noted that the 55% is shared between Melayu, Bumiputera Sabah and Bumiputera Sarawak. You think 55% is enough to be shared by 53.3% (Melayu) and 11.8% (Asli) which total up to be 65.1% of the Malaysia population ?
One more thing I'd like you to do is to refer to Article 153 from the Federal Constitution before you start complaining. Owing to the fact that you said you still patronize this country of yours, I was wondering if you even know what is the Perlembagaan Persekutuan ? okay lah, since you barely speak Bahasa Malaysia la kan, Perlembagaan Persekutuan is the Federal Constitution which is also the supreme law of Malaysia. Have you ever came across 'Perkara 153' in it ? Article 153 I mean..Hmm, quite sure you don't have any idea about the content of Perkara 153. It's my pleasure to share with you what this article is all about. Perkara 153 grants the Yang di-Pertuan Agong responsibility for safeguarding the special position of the Malays (Melayu) and natives of any of the States of Sabah and Sarawak (peribumi) and the legitimate interests of other communities and goes on to specify ways to do this, such as establishing quotas for entry into the civil service, public scholarships, and public education.
Satisfied ? I know this is one of the most controversial articles which has been the source of controversy since the early days of Malaysia for it is considered to create unnecessary distinction between Malaysians of different ethnic backgrounds. For me, there's nothing wrong about this article. Statistics said it all. and again, please refer to Article 16 up to 19 to see what the govt. has done to you. Is this the way you show your gratitude ? And just as a friendly reminder, the 'ketuanan Melayu' is something that you can't just dispute about.
A little quotation from this site :
So, if you wish to take away that hak istimewa which has been given to us, then sorry to say lah, then your kewarganegaraan has to be taken back as well la, baru fair kan ? You want justice ? so, this is it.
You may say I have nothing to protest because I'm a Melayu bumiputera whose right is being preserved ? haha, then which part of yours isn't protected ? Having this bumiputra status doesn't mean that the other races would be treated as second-class citizens. It's not like the Malays are the dominant group while non-Malays are forever outsiders. I utterly disapprove the way that blogger said "from their own circle" Others rights are still being preserved by the constitution. Everyone has been given equal opportunities to excel in whatever field they have chosen to embark in. Sigh.. I'm at loss for words, so disappointed. Tepuk dada, tanya selera.

The entry is about being fair vs. being equal.
It will probably be an issue at least once among you kids someday :)
Well, if you feel I'm being unfair or unequal to you guys, plese don't hesitate to complain anytime.
I expect you kids to be honest to me, at least honest to yourself.
That's all.
Have a good read :D

(Thinking of saving a copy of the entry, in case the author will delete the entry or her blog some time)
